After a week in Italy (which was an adventure in itself) I returned to Nice to properly complete my journey. My Swedish friends drove me and brought my suitcase with 3 pairs of high heels (one pink, one gold, one black), a dress, cut-off shorts, and red lipstick -- anything you'd want in the Rivera. My sister had kindly mailed the suitcase a few weeks ago (she mailed it as is, no box or anything). I also picked up a Prada dress in Italy (as pictured).
First things first: we had to find a bike box. We went from bike shop to bike shop and finally found the perfect one. All of the shops were very helpful in locating what I needed, and I was even given packing materials. I then picked up a bottle of pink champaign to match my Prada dress and we celebrated on the water between the port and the promenade. I DID IT!!!!! I was treated to a lovely outdoor cafe-style dinner, and I relished my last night in France.
I am now on the airplane in the same black dress in which I arrived. I'm going home.
Looking back, if there was one thing my trip was about it's faith, faith in humanity and faith in myself. The compassion of others was the most beautiful thing I experienced on this trip, and I am forever moved by the generosity of strangers. Where does that compassion come from, and how do we access it? I return in awe of the connection among all living things.
I also return with a greater faith in myself. Being an independent woman is not about doing it alone, but about knowing how to work with others in order to do something greater. It's also about loving yourself -- take yourself to a four-course dinner! buy pink champaign because it matches your shoes! bike across France because you feel like it! Being by myself I heard my voice clearer, and knowing and acting on my desires made me very happy.
My last note is to always be open to awe. Dream. Imagine. Life is full of miracles and surprises when you allow them to happen. I finish my ride stunned by the beauty of this world and awakened by our infinite possibilities. And I keep riding.
What's next? Italy? Argentina? The Northern and Eastern boarder of France? I have no idea, but maybe I'll bring some friends.
With love,
Diane
